Felix Longoria’s Wake The book Felix Longoria’s Wake is the account of the death of Felix Longoria a soldier that caused controversy and outrage in Mexican-American activism. This book is put together with documented evidence and interviews with key figures. Carroll explains the reason behind why Longoria’s incident ignited activism. There were more severe acts of discrimination against Mexican Americans that were not brought into the spot light. He clarifies why this particular incident became such a turning point in nationalism and emotion between the Mexican and American cultures. Felix Longoria’s Wake was originally to be written by Political Science Professor Frederick A. Cervantes who unfortunately passed away in 1986. A Civil Rights Activist appointed Carroll to complete the task. â€Å"Felix Longoria’s Wake† received positive reviews and the Tullis Prize in 2003 for the best-published book on Texas history presented by the Texas State Hi storical Association. He was also a featured author in the 2003 Texas Book Festival. Carroll has given presentations across the nation and Mexico and received the University’s Excellence in Scholarship Award in 2004. The book was very well put together and organized with documented evidence and interviews from important people. A lot of research was put into this book and all the research used is cited in the back of the book. Since the topic is such a controversial topic I understand that all the information had to be correctly used which is why the research was so in-depth. The book was easy to read there was a few words I was unsure of and had to define in order to better understand them. The situation itself brought up other issues of that time such as: social, economic, and politics. The conclusion at the end really helps by summing up some main points considering there is a lot of information throughout the reading. The Corporation: A Book Review Joel Bakan’s book, The Corporation: the Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, is a decisive look into the mind of the corporation, or big business. It outlines the importance of profit in business and how ruthless corporations are willing to be in order to bring in substantial revenue. The book uses a historical timeframe to portray the ruthlessness of business ever since the idea of the corporation arose in the 17th century. It provides an insight into a world of cheating, lying and stealing in order to advance in society; which is ultimately the goal Bakan was looking to reach. Upon impact the gas tank exploded which caused her children to be burnt . She then took her case to court in an attempt to sue General Motors for producing a gas tank which was unsafe and of poor design. When the car was originally test driven a memo had concluded that it would be cheaper to keep the current tank as it was then to produce a safer design. General Motors had concluded that the number of paying for the number of fatalities per vehicle on the road would be cheaper than reproducing a new gas tank to refit its vehicles. It is reasons like this that leads Bakan to conclude that cost-benefit analysis needs to be reviewed and legislation involved. Corporations need to be prevented from â€Å"acting in ways that are reasonably likely to cause harm, even if definitive proof that such harms will occur does not exist.†(PG 162) This is not the only case Bakan provides to help us see the idea of cost-benefit and how the desire for profit outweighs the general concern for human life. I thought the test would not be a big deal and decided to shirk studying or preparing at all. The day before the test my teacher lectured and I finally realized the challenge of balancing chemical equations. I went home that night and I could not stand the pressure, so I decided not even to try to prepared. I will regret that mistake for the rest of my high-school, and college experience. The day of the test arrived and I anxiously walked to class, first hour chemistry, and the best part of waking up. Twelve Spanish boats had come, traveling the coast and looking for places to land. The Spanish managed to get two boats in. It is documented that these boats came in fighting. With the village emptied the Spaniards took as they pleased. As the Spaniards continued they came to a place where the fortress was well fortified. This presented no obstacle as they used their canons to blast down the wall.and the fourth time finally the wall went to the ground once and for all (sources, 70 L.) Once inside, the Tzilacatzin and some other warriors went out to face the oncoming Spaniards. These warriors used nothing more than stones repeal the oncoming Spanish. This sent the Spaniards retreating. Some of these warriors hid in the dense brush, and as the Spaniards came through the warriors ambush them. The Spaniards had come with gunpowder and guns and when ambushed these guns did not help. The selection is not specific but I dont believe the Aztec had guns of any kind. Dom Pedro de Sousa led them. This battle was a retaliation of an earlier battle in which the Zimba had killed one of the Portuguese priests. Dom Pedro de Sousa obtained information about his enemy and quickly raised an army. 200 Portuguese and 1500 Kaffirs (sources, 65 L.) He also took various pieces of artillery, which he wanted to use on the walls. When this failed he was determined to enter by assault. He had part of the trench filled, through which several of his soldiers were wounded by the arrows being shot from above. The natives also used boiling fat and water, which they poured on the attackers and scalded them. They also used iron hooks, which they would stick through the holes of the wall and grab anyone who came too close and wounded them mortally. Following this encounter the captain ordered his men back to camp so they could rest and tend to the wounded. The captain had an idea that would put his men on an equal ground with the natives. He would build wickerwork frames that his men could stand on in use their guns against the Zimba. With this strategy nearly ready to go, several of his men claimed to have received letters from their wives relating a danger at home. The residents of Sena went to the captain and begged him to abandon the siege of the Zimba and attend to what was of greater importance (Sources 65r). In the Tenochtitlan battle the natives lay hidden in the brush and waited to ambush the oncoming Spaniards, and were able to win without the use of gunpowder. In the battle Mozambique the natives remained in their fortress and with out the use of gunpowder held back the mighty Portuguese. The greatest difference between these two battles is that in the battle of Mozambique the Portuguese must have grown tired or maybe fearful of fighting the natives. This is evident because of the alleged letters they received from their wives. In the battle of Tenochtitlan the men may have been ambushed so quickly they did not have time to develop fear of the natives and their weapons. These two battles present interesting situations in which the technologically advanced peoples lost to a more primitive culture. Stearns adequately discusses how countries became world powers through the use an adaptation of gunpowder. In fact, it goes so far as to say that the only reason nations using gunpowder fell, is because of weak central governments. The Chinese had great success with gunpowder and other countries seeing this success wanted to duplicate it. Thus, they hired specialists to replicate and in some cases improve upon the existing guns. In many areas, the new military technology contributed decisively to broader social and political transformations. (Stearns, 119r). In these cases canons were used to reduce enemy castles to nothing more than scrap rock. This brought about a major change in defense systems. The resulting systems were often expensive, but resulted in a core of new highway strategic officers. As stated earlier some countries fell because of weak centr al governments. In an effort to avoid this the Japanese banned firearms. They felt the public having firearms would promote revolts. In the end it is shown that countries that adapted to using guns were more successful and maintained power longer. In each of the Muslim Empires, decline was both relative to and hastened by the rise of European rivals, who proved more adept at taking advantage of the power potential offered by the gun powder revolution. (Stearns, 120r). So the question remains why did two primitive countries defeat major nations in two separate battles? Our book would have us believe that any nation holding gunpowder technology would be superior to a country that does not possess that technology. These two battles clearly show that more goes into a flight than just technology. In the battle of Tenochtitlan the egotistical Spanish marched right into their own death trap. In the battle Mozambique several factors played: 1. Poor leadership 2. Poor strategy. The captain let his men gets so down after their first defeat that they did not want to go back again. Also, it was very poor strategy to attack a fortress where the soldiers were looking down on you. The captain had a better strategy but by then it was too late his men were fearful fighting again. These two battles go to show that our authors have over estimated gunpowder. It is a tool, but not the deciding factor.

Should You Bother Starting A Google+ Community Google+ is a fun and flexible social network with lots of creative uses,  and it gives you a nice boost towards Google finding your content in search results.  If youre creative and regularly active on the network, your Google+ page will be a powerful workhorse for you. But what about Google+ Communities? Should you have one? While your Google+ circles can create a simple version of a community, Google+ has created a system specifically intended to serve as a forum or group within the larger social network. It comes some handy controls and features that you cant mimic with a simple Google+ circle, butit also  comes with an added work load. What Will A Google+ Community Require? Before you decide if a Google+ Community is worth it, you should first understand what having a community will involve. Be responsible for what happens in your community. You are responsible for what happens in your community. Unlike a circle, a community comes with an understanding of moderation happening. Some communities put up a disclaimer and let it turn into a bit of a free-for-all, but remember that youre after quality, not quantity. You want the engagement, the conversations, the content, the participants, the ideas–they need to be of quality. You dont want to chase after the lowest common denominator just to get quantity. A popular community will always face the never-ending battle with  appropriate comments, just like you would on your blog.
